About the work

Anna Gaskell’s work Gaskell Morris Bazaar shows herself together with the artist Sarah Morris photographing her through a mirror. The setting is the Ladies Room of the iconic Four Seasons restaurant in New York, the composition is inspired by a photograph by Helmut Newton. The work is an intimate portrait by one artist of another, and therefore stands in tradition of earlier works by Anna Gaskell, for example of her SVETA series, which was focused on Svetlana Lunkina, the former prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theatre, and of her film Echo Morris, which was Gaskell’s first portrait of the artist Sarah Morris.

This edition has been generously donated by the artist to Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition Terrains of the Body: Photography from the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Whitechapel Gallery, 2017.

About the artist

After studying art at The Chicago Art Institute, Anna Gaskell (b. 1969, Des Moines) received her M.F.A. from Yale University.

In her work she frequently plays with ideas of the original and the fake, the real and the copy. For the series Wonder, 1995, she photographed identical twins who long for individuality; in the Rashomon-like film Erasers, 2005, twelve girls each tell their version of a single event; an argument between three children is reenacted by adults in Replayground, 2009; while Swimming Lessons, 2012, twists fact and fiction in the story of a group of evangelical teenagers; in echokinetic manor Gaskell herself mirrors a dancer’s movements in the video Balletomane, 2014.

Selected Exhibitions

Erasers won Best Film in the Art Category at the Kunst Film Biennale in 2005; for her film Replayground, Gaskell received the award for Best Documentary Short Film at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2009, and Gaskell has been the recipient of grants from NYFA, Artslink, and The Bohen Foundation in 2010. Her work is held in the permanent collections of major international institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Whitney Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Tate Gallery, London, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, Deste Foundation, Athens and the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo.

Whitechapel Gallery editions are generously donated by the artists. All proceeds from the sale of these works directly support our exhibition and education programmes. As is traditional in editions publishing, prices will rise as an edition starts to sell out.
