About the work

Radio Shamen...is a self portrait taken from Marcus Coates' film documentation of his performance as a shaman, attempting to help the people of Stavanger, Norway to deal with recent anxieties around immigration. Coates evokes the legacy of the German performance artist Joseph Beuys, as he holds a stuffed hare and dons the skin of a reindeer to perform shamanistic rituals in the town's centers of religion, politics and media.

About the artist

Based in London, Coates' work wryly explores the human condition through experimentation with 'becoming' and 'being' an animal. His performances reference ornithology, zoology and anthropology and also the role of the shaman, which he sometimes adopts to gain insight into difficult problems on behalf of the public.

Selected exhibitions

Coates has had work featured in exhibitions at the Venice Biennale; The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead; Arnolfini, Bristol; Lisson Gallery, London and the Pompidou Centre, Paris. He has also shown at the ICA and Hayward Galleries, London; MOMA, New York and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California. He has works held in collections at Tate Liverpool; MOMA, New York and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Italy.

Whitechapel Gallery editions are generously donated by the artists. All proceeds from the sale of these works directly support our exhibition and education programmes. As is traditional in editions publishing, prices will rise as an edition starts to sell out.
