About the work

Tomma Abts’ precise drawings and paintings have a contemplative intimacy and formal rigour that evoke a feeling of the timeless. Through an intuitive and experimental process of working and overlaying, abstract forms and patterns emerge from lush, muted layers of colour, creating a kind of visual conversation or maybe even a psychological portrait.

Usually working in A4 and always in portrait format, Abts has created this limited edition for the Whitechapel Gallery as a pair of lithographic prints and one of the special annual Whitechapel Gift editions for 2012, all proceeds go to towards assisting the Gallery education programme to help support the next generation of talented artists.

About the artist

Born in Kiel, Germany Abts was awarded the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award in 2004 and the Turner Prize in 2006. Abts currently lives and works in London and is represented by Greengrassi, London and David Zwirner, New York.

Abts has had solo exhibitions at The Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; The Kunsthalle Basel, Basel; Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Cologne, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, 2008 and Greengrassi, London. She has partaken in group exhibitions at Museum of Modern Art San Francisco; Arnolfini, Bridstol; Tate Britain, London and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
